Fethiye Camii in Istanbul, Turkey, is a mosque of particular historical weight, occupying the former Church of the Pammakaristos, one of the most important Byzantine monastic foundations of Constantinople. After the Ottoman conquest of 1453 the building served for a time as the seat of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, a remarkable continuity of ecclesiastical function, before being converted to a mosque in 1591 under Sultan Murad III to commemorate the Ottoman conquests of Georgia and Azerbaijan, from which the name Fethiye, meaning Victory or Conquest, is derived. The building's layered history makes it one of the most fascinating sites in the old city. The main domed church was adapted to Islamic use with the addition of a mihrab aligned toward Makkah, and mosaic decorations of the side chapel, the parekklesion, have been preserved and remain accessible for study, offering one of the finest surviving expressions of late Byzantine art alongside the continuing Islamic function of the main space. The Fatih district setting places the mosque in a historically dense neighbourhood, removed from the main tourist circuits of Sultanahmet but richly rewarding for the patient visitor. Today the mosque functions as an active place of prayer, with the five daily congregations and the Friday midday service observed by a local congregation drawn from the surrounding streets. The Friday khutbah follows the Diyanet's weekly text in Turkish. For visitors, Fethiye Camii offers a powerful encounter with the city's continuous sacred heritage and the complex ways in which communities of faith have shared, succeeded, and adapted spaces across the centuries. Modest dress, shoes removed at the threshold, hair covered for women entering the prayer hall, quiet conduct throughout, and photography avoided during active prayer are the essential courtesies. Access to the mosaic chapel may be subject to separate arrangements depending on current practice, which visitors should verify at the entrance. The preserved mosaics in the parekklesion remain one of the most significant sights in the building for any visitor with an interest in art history, accessible separately from the main prayer space.
