Tentang

Tucked among the walled alleys of the holy city of Harar in eastern Ethiopia, Sheikh Ahmed Wazir Mosque belongs to the remarkable dense network of nearly one hundred small mosques that fill the UNESCO World Heritage old town with the memory of saintly teachers, scholars, and benefactors across the centuries. The name Wazir, minister, carries in Harari tradition the weight of service to the wider community, and many Harari mosques bear the names of historic figures whose leadership shaped the religious, political, and cultural life of the city over the medieval and modern periods.
Harari Islamic heritage is a wonder of Muslim Africa. The city became a major centre of Qur'anic learning, Arabic grammar, prophetic tradition, and legal studies in the medieval period, producing scholars whose works circulated to the Hijaz and beyond. The old city walls, known as Jugol, were built in the sixteenth century and pierced by five historic gates, and within them the population of perhaps twenty thousand people shares a living Islamic urban culture that has been continuously maintained for more than five hundred years. Small neighbourhood mosques like the Sheikh Ahmed Wazir Mosque are tended by the descendants of their founders across generations, serving as daily houses of prayer, gathering places for elders, and sites of blessing for pilgrims visiting the city.
The architectural style of Harari mosques is distinctive and deeply charming. Whitewashed coral stone walls, flat roofs, small modest minarets or turrets, and brightly painted wooden doorways shape the exterior, while the interior is cooled by thick walls and narrow windows. Woven grass mats cover the floor of the prayer hall, the mihrab carries modest calligraphy, and an alcove beside the entrance holds the imam's books and prayer beads. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, praised the Ethiopians for their compassion when they sheltered the first Muslim emigrants, and Harari families cherish that prophetic approval in every generation. Daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at this mosque appear on this page for every resident of Harar and every visitor exploring the walled old city.
