Mosquée Unité 20 in Grand Dakar serves one of the planned residential sectors of the Parcelles Assainies or Unité districts of Dakar, neighbourhoods developed during the city's post independence expansion as organised residential zones for the growing urban population. The Unité districts, numbered sequentially, feature planned streets, allocated plots, and community amenities including mosques serving the residents of each sector. Mosquée Unité 20 fulfills this role for its specific section, providing a convenient place of worship within walking distance of the homes of its surrounding community. The structure typically features a modest but dignified Senegalese mosque form with a dome, a minaret from which the muadhin calls the adhan five times daily, whitewashed walls, and an interior prayer hall carpeted and oriented toward the qibla. A mihrab, mimbar, separate women's section, and ablution facilities complete the essential features. Programmes include the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah with khutbah in Wolof and Arabic, Qur'an and tajwid classes for children and adults, Arabic language instruction, Islamic studies in the Maliki jurisprudential tradition of West Africa, Sufi brotherhood dhikr and wird sessions appropriate to the congregation's affiliation whether Tijaniyya, Mouridiyya, Layeniyya, or Qadiriyya, marriage solemnisation, funeral rites, zakat distribution, and welfare services for needy families. Ramadan at Mosquée Unité 20 brings the community together for nightly tarawih prayers, shared iftars featuring Senegalese dishes like thieboudienne, yassa, and ceebu jën, Qur'an khatm sessions through the blessed month, and itikaf during the final ten nights as worshippers seek closeness to Allah and the blessings of Laylatul Qadr. The congregation at Mosquée Unité 20 takes particular pride in maintaining the mosque's physical condition through regular community cleaning sessions and small fundraising drives, recognising that the beauty and dignity of the house of Allah reflects the sincerity of those who worship within it, an attitude captured in the Prophetic teaching that cleanliness is half of faith and expressed practically in the careful upkeep of this modest neighbourhood institution.
