Tentang

Mosquée Mouride in Grand Dakar serves the adherents of the Mouride brotherhood, one of the largest and most influential Sufi orders in Senegal and indeed in all of West Africa. The Mouridiyya was founded in the late nineteenth century by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Mbacké, the great Senegalese saint whose life of pious resistance to French colonial authorities, scholarly prolific output, and devotion to work and spiritual discipline shaped a movement that today counts millions of adherents across Senegal and the global Senegalese diaspora from Dakar to New York, Paris, and beyond. The holy city of Touba, founded by Ahmadou Bamba deep in the Senegalese interior, remains the Mouride spiritual capital and hosts the annual Magal pilgrimage drawing millions of disciples. Mouride mosques in Dakar and other Senegalese cities serve local adherents with the standard programme of Islamic worship alongside distinctive Mouride devotional practices including the recitation of Ahmadou Bamba's own poetic works, collective dhikr sessions, and communal work projects that the order has elevated to spiritual significance. The mosque in Grand Dakar features traditional Senegalese architecture with a dome, minaret, whitewashed walls, and an interior prayer hall carpeted and oriented toward the qibla, decorated with Arabic calligraphy and images or symbols associated with Ahmadou Bamba and subsequent Mouride khalifas. Programmes include the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah, Mouride khassida recitation sessions, Qur'an classes, Arabic language instruction, marriage and funeral services, and welfare distribution. Ramadan brings nightly tarawih prayers, community iftars featuring Senegalese dishes, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf during the final ten nights, while Mouride religious occasions including Magal anniversaries are commemorated with particular intensity honouring the heritage of Ahmadou Bamba and the spiritual chain of his successors. The Grand Magal of Touba, the annual Mouride pilgrimage honouring the anniversary of Ahmadou Bamba's exile to Gabon by the French colonial authorities in 1895, draws millions of Mouride disciples from across Senegal and the global diaspora each year, and Mosquée Mouride in Grand Dakar plays its role in the preparatory and follow up observances that mark this most significant occasion in the Mouride spiritual calendar.
