Göynük Mahallesi Eyüp Sultan Camii

Above the Mediterranean pines of Goynuk in Antalya province, this neighbourhood mosque takes the beloved name of Abu Ayyub al Ansari, may God be pleased with him, the companion who hosted the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, in Medina after the blessed migration. Abu Ayyub, known in Turkish lands as Eyup Sultan, later joined the first Muslim forces to march against Constantinople and was buried beneath the walls of that great city, and mosques across Turkey carry his name in affectionate memory. Antalya province itself sits on the sun drenched southern coastline where Byzantine churches once overlooked the turquoise gulf and where Seljuk and Ottoman communities gradually established a mosaic of Turkish Islamic settlements among the citrus orchards and tomato plantations.

The Goynuk mosque is a modest neighbourhood structure of reinforced concrete clad in pale limestone, topped by a single grey lead dome and one slender minaret that rises above the rooflines of the surrounding villas. The prayer hall inside is a simple square covered by a broad dome painted cream with a central medallion of intertwined calligraphy repeating the names of God and His Messenger. Antalya's booming resort economy draws seasonal workers from across Anatolia to the Goynuk coastline, and this mosque serves both the permanent residents of the old village higher up the hillside and the staff of nearby hotels who come for the five daily prayers between shifts. Friday sermons are delivered in Turkish by an imam appointed by the Diyanet, and during Ramadan the municipality sets tables in the small square beside the ablution fountain for a communal iftar of lentil soup, olives, cheese pastries and ripe dates. The building also runs a summer Quran school for children, where retired teachers volunteer to guide recitation and memorisation through the long holidays.
