Suaru Kampung Kastam

The surau known locally as Surau Kampung Kastam sits in a modest pocket of George Town where the residential kampung character has survived the heritage-driven regeneration that has transformed much of the inner city. During Ramadan the surau becomes the heart of the kampung's spiritual life, with community iftars contributed by rotating families, Taraweeh prayers led by a local hafiz who is often a young person recently returned from studies in Kelantan or Terengganu, and quiet gatherings in the final ten nights of the month. Eid mornings see the surau empty into the surrounding streets for Eid prayer, with families greeting one another in the kind of long, relaxed exchanges that are only possible in a community that has shared most of its life together.
