Tentang
On the edge of Sungai Gelugor, within the George Town district of Penang in Malaysia, Masjid Jamek Sungai Gelugor has served the families along the river for generations. Its location near the water lends a pleasant breeze that makes the courtyard a favourite spot for quiet conversation between prayers. The mosque is a jamek, qualified to hold the Friday congregational prayer, and on Fridays the street outside fills with cars, motorcycles, and men walking in white baju melayu or simple kurtas. The architecture is regional Malay-Islamic — a pitched roof, a low dome, open-air arcades that make the most of Penang's tropical weather, and a minaret from which the bilal still calls the adhan five times a day. Inside, a patterned carpet marks the saf lines, and a mihrab of modest carved wood orients the congregation toward Makkah. The jamaah is mixed — fisher families, retired civil servants, factory workers from the nearby industrial estates, and students from the university. The mosque committee runs a madrasah for children, a Qur'an tahfiz programme for older students, and regular ceramah featuring ustadz from across Malaysia. During the blessed month of Ramadan, the surrounding community brings food for the iftar buffet, with proceeds from donations funding sadaqah distributed to the poorer families in the area. Taraweeh prayers fill the hall to its capacity, and the final Friday of Ramadan sees special khutbahs and duas. Funerals and weddings, aqiqah gatherings and the occasional tahlil for those who have passed on, all pass through these doors with the quiet dignity typical of small-town Malaysian masjids. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم reminded the believers that the mosque is the house of every pious person, and for the families of Sungai Gelugor that hadith is made real every single day at this unassuming but much-loved building beside the river. When the tide is high and the air thickens with salt, the congregation at Maghrib is quieter than usual, and the imam often lets the pause after Al-Fatihah stretch a little longer, as if giving the river itself space to breathe.
