Tentang

Masjid Jamek Haji Kassim in George Town carries the name of one of the merchants and community leaders whose contributions made its construction possible, a pattern familiar across older Malaysian mosques where the sponsor's name becomes inseparable from the building itself. The mosque serves as a Friday mosque — a masjid jamek rather than a smaller surau — and hosts Jumu'ah prayer alongside the five daily prayers, with a dedicated minbar, a formal imam, and the administrative structure required by the Penang Islamic Religious Council for registered mosques. The building is modest compared with the state mosque on the other side of George Town, but substantial enough to serve its neighbourhood: a clear dome visible from several streets away, a minaret from which the adhan is broadcast five times a day, a main prayer hall that accommodates several hundred worshippers, and a separate women's section. The congregation is drawn from the surrounding heritage neighbourhoods of inner George Town, a mix of Malay families long settled in the area and a number of Indian-Muslim families whose presence in Penang dates back to the nineteenth century trading networks that connected the Straits Settlements to Madras and Singapore. Friday prayers fill the hall, and the khutbah is delivered in Malay with occasional Arabic recitations. During Ramadan the mosque runs nightly Taraweeh, organises community iftars, and participates in the broader network of Penang mosques that coordinate zakat distribution and community welfare. The Eid prayers draw a full congregation that overflows into the adjacent streets. The mosque also functions as a Qur'anic school in the evenings, with classes for children and tajweed tuition for adults who want to refine their recitation. For visitors walking through the heritage streets of George Town, the mosque is visible, welcoming, and representative of the quieter Muslim religious life that underlies the more photogenic layers of the UNESCO-listed district.
