Tentang

Serving the devout Palestinian community of Gaza city in the besieged Gaza Strip, Masjid Sa'd ibn Ashur al Ghafari honours a local benefactor of the al Ghafari family whose endowment provided a neighbourhood in need of a dignified place of worship and gathering. Gaza itself is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on the Mediterranean coast, with Canaanite, Philistine, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Mamluk, Ottoman, British, and modern Palestinian layers woven into its archaeological and architectural fabric. The Prophet Muhammad's great grandfather Hashim ibn Abd Manaf is said to be buried in the Sayyid Hashim mosque of Gaza, a tradition that gives the city a deep sentimental place in the Muslim heart.
Gazan Islamic heritage reaches across fourteen centuries of continuous scholarship, daily prayer, and pilgrimage connection to al Aqsa. The companion Omar ibn al Khattab (may God be pleased with him) sent Muslim armies through the region in the 630s, and Gaza entered Muslim rule as one of the earliest conquered cities of the Levant. Across the subsequent centuries, Gazan scholars studied at al Azhar in Cairo and at the great Damascene institutions, and Gaza developed its own network of mosques, madrasas, and zawiyas that shaped the devotional life of the city through the Mamluk, Ottoman, and modern periods. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, taught that whoever builds a mosque for the sake of God, God will build for him a house in Paradise.
Architecturally the masjid follows the honest concrete and stone construction common across Gazan neighbourhood mosques. Whitewashed walls frame tall arched windows, a single square minaret rises above the surrounding apartment blocks, and a small dome sits above the prayer hall. Inside, patterned carpets cover the floor, ceiling fans turn steadily through the long Mediterranean summer, and the mihrab carries Qur'anic calligraphy. Friday sermons address themes of patience through hardship, trust in God, and solidarity with the wider ummah, while during Ramadan the community gathers for collective iftars of maqluba, musakhan, and sweet qatayef. Daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the Sa'd ibn Ashur mosque appear on this page for every resident and visitor of Gaza.
