Tadschikische Gesellschaft NUR e. V. — the Tajik Society NUR — in Dortmund, Germany, is one of the relatively rare mosques in western Europe that serves a specifically Tajik Muslim community. Tajik migration to Germany is more recent and smaller in scale than Turkish or Arab migration, and a dedicated Tajik centre is a significant achievement for the community. The name NUR means "light," a beautiful Qur'anic word invoking divine guidance. The centre functions as both a mosque and a cultural association, preserving the Persian-language Islamic tradition of Central Asia in a German context. Tajik Muslims speak a variety of Persian closely related to the Dari of Afghanistan, and much of the internal life of the centre — announcements, classes, casual conversation — happens in that language. The mosque follows the Hanafi school, standard across Central Asia, and observes the religious calendar in the familiar rhythm inherited from centuries of Central Asian Islamic tradition. The building itself is modest — an adapted space in the urban fabric of Dortmund, with a prayer hall, a small library of Tajik, Persian, and Arabic books, and rooms for community gatherings and classes. Friday prayers bring the community together, with a khutbah often delivered partly in Tajik and partly in German or Arabic depending on the attending imam. Ramadan is observed with the particular foods and customs of Tajikistan — osh palav, sambusa, fresh-baked non from an outdoor oven when possible, shared at iftar tables. Teravih prayers are held every night, and the community marks Laylat al-Qadr with special prayers and gatherings. Tajik poetry, much of it classical Persian Sufi verse celebrating the love of Allah and the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, is recited during community events, connecting the younger generation to a centuries-old literary heritage. The centre plays a vital role in helping newer Tajik arrivals settle into Germany, navigate its bureaucracy, find work, and raise their children as Muslims in a non-Muslim majority country. In its specific cultural particularity, NUR contributes to the rich mosaic of Islamic life in diaspora Germany.
