Mevlana Moskee in Delfshaven, the historic western district of Rotterdam where the Pilgrim Fathers departed for the New World in 1620 and where handsome seventeenth century warehouses still line the canal, serves a Turkish Dutch Muslim community with a mosque named in honour of Mevlana Jalal al Din Rumi, the thirteenth century Persian Sunni poet and Sufi master whose mystical teachings in the Masnavi have shaped Muslim spirituality for eight centuries. Rumi, born in Balkh and settled in Konya, drew disciples from across the Islamic world with his sermons, his poetry, and his famous teaching that love is the bridge between the believer and Allah. Though he died seven and a half centuries ago his legacy continues to flourish through the Mevlevi Sufi order and through the countless readers of his verses across cultures and languages. Naming a mosque after Mevlana in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam carries his spiritual heritage across the seas to a new home where Turkish migrants and their descendants gather for worship. The mosque serves the Turkish Muslim community of Delfshaven with the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah, Qur'an and tajwid classes, Turkish language education for children, Dutch language support for newer arrivals, marriage and funeral services, and welfare initiatives. The prayer hall inside the adapted building is carpeted, oriented toward the qibla, and adorned with calligraphy in classical Ottoman style, with a mihrab, mimbar, and women's section. Ramadan sees nightly tarawih prayers, iftar gatherings featuring Turkish cuisine, Qur'an khatm through the month, and itikaf in the blessed final ten nights. The mevlid of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam is celebrated with Suleyman Celebi Mevlid recitation, and Rumi's own birthday is often marked with readings from the Masnavi alongside standard Islamic devotion. The Rotterdam Mevlana Moskee connects with Mevlevi circles across Europe and Turkey through occasional visits from qualified sufi teachers and through participation in Mevlana commemoration events, while also hosting readings from the Masnavi in both Turkish and Dutch translation, making Rumi's universal spiritual teachings accessible to the second generation of Turkish Dutch youth and to Dutch neighbours curious about the wisdom of this revered sufi master.
