Masjid Shafii in Dar es Salaam takes its name from the great imam and jurist Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i, whose school of jurisprudence has long been dominant along the Swahili coast of East Africa. The mosque sits in a neighbourhood where most residents follow the Shafi'i madhhab in daily practice, and the worship here reflects that tradition — from the raising of the hands in prayer to the pattern of qunut in fajr and the attention given to the specific rulings of taharah. The building is a typical Dar es Salaam neighbourhood mosque: a central prayer hall, a small ablution area, a modest minaret and a courtyard that fills with worshippers on Fridays and during the two Eids. The imam tends to deliver the khutbah in Kiswahili, drawing on classical Shafi'i texts and supporting his arguments with verses of Qur'an and well-known hadith, which keeps the sermons both rooted and accessible. Attendance across the five daily prayers varies, with maghrib and isha often the busiest as residents return home from work, but the core jama'ah of regular worshippers ensures that no prayer is offered alone. Ramadan transforms Masjid Shafii into a bustling centre of devotion, with taraweeh prayers stretching deep into the night, Qur'an completions celebrated by the community, and shared iftars laid out on mats for anyone in need of a meal. Beyond the ritual core, the mosque also quietly supports small teaching circles for children and occasional evening lessons for adults, preserving the classical East African pattern of scholarly transmission. Visitors are welcome during prayer times provided they dress modestly and approach quietly, and those wishing to contribute to the mosque's upkeep or its charitable work are directed to the committee of local elders who oversee its affairs. Older worshippers take pleasure in reminiscing about classical Shafi'i scholars from Lamu, Zanzibar and the Comoros whose writings once circulated widely along the coast, and some of these same works still sit on shelves at Masjid Shafii, occasionally opened in teaching circles for the benefit of the curious.
