Tentang

Madrasat-Twaheeb in Dar es Salaam combines the roles of mosque and Islamic school, as so many community institutions along the Swahili coast do. The name evokes the idea of gifts — the gifts of faith, knowledge and community that the institution seeks to pass on to the next generation. The building serves as a house of daily worship, with the five prayers offered in jama'ah and a modest Friday congregation that fills the hall with worshippers from the surrounding streets. At the same time it functions as a working madrasa, with children arriving in the afternoon once their state schooling has ended to study the Qur'an, tajweed, the basics of belief and the fiqh of everyday worship. Teachers at Twaheeb tend to combine patience with clear standards: pupils are expected to memorise and review consistently, but mistakes are met with gentle correction rather than harshness. Classes are taught mostly in Kiswahili with Arabic terms explained carefully, and older pupils are introduced to basic grammar so that they can begin to read the Qur'an with understanding. Alongside the formal curriculum, the school encourages manners — greeting elders, serving guests, respecting parents — which local families recognise as an essential extension of religious instruction. The mosque component comes into its own during Ramadan, when taraweeh is offered each night and shared iftars are laid out for worshippers without family nearby. Eid days bring a particular warmth, with the whole community gathering in best clothes and the children especially excited by the break from routine. Visitors are welcome to attend prayer, and those drawn to the educational work are encouraged to support the teachers' modest stipends and the provision of Qur'ans and notebooks for pupils whose families cannot easily afford them. Teachers at Twaheeb sometimes invite parents to sit in on lessons for a day, a simple practice that has nonetheless strengthened ties between home and school, since mothers and fathers go home with renewed clarity about what is being taught and how they can reinforce it in everyday family routines.
