Tentang

Masjid Al Moutad Ali is located in Dakar, Senegal — the Senegalese capital and largest city, a cosmopolitan port city at the western edge of Africa where Islam has been the dominant religion for centuries. The mosque's name combines several elements — Al Moutad possibly referring to a local figure or place, and Ali honouring Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, peace be upon him, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, fourth caliph, and a figure of immense reverence across the Muslim world. The mosque serves its community with the daily prayers, Friday jumu'ah, and the rhythm of Islamic religious life as observed in Senegal, where Sufi brotherhoods — primarily the Tijaniyya and Muridiyya — shape the texture of religious practice while the shared liturgical framework of Sunni Islam unites all Muslims in essential ways. The building follows the familiar West African urban mosque aesthetic: a concrete structure with a minaret, a courtyard for wudu and shoes, a prayer hall with carpet, and a separate women's section. The imam leads the prayers, delivers Friday khutbahs often in Wolof with Arabic Qur'anic recitation, and participates in the religious and community life of the surrounding neighbourhood. Dhikr circles, mawlid celebrations, and Qur'an recitation gatherings are regular parts of the mosque's programme. Senegalese Ramadan has its own particular character: dates and local sweets for iftar, the hearty dinners that follow, the taraweeh prayers in the cool of the evening, and the deep communal warmth that pervades the month. The annual pilgrimage to Touba for the Mouride Grand Magal, the pilgrimage to Tivaouane for the Tijani Mawlid, and other major religious gatherings are anticipated throughout the year and organised with the help of the network of mosques across the country. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said that Ali was to him as Aaron was to Moses, and a mosque bearing his name quietly honours that intimate relationship and the tradition of the Ahl al-Bayt that has remained precious to Muslims across every generation and every continent. The long-serving muadhin has a particular lilt in his recitation of the adhan that is recognised by locals walking past on the street, and visitors from other parts of Dakar have been known to stop and listen simply to hear the call delivered in his careful voice. Across the street from the mosque an old tamarind tree shades a gathering spot where elders linger after Jumu'ah to exchange news and settle small neighbourhood disputes, and the imam has more than once walked across to offer a gentle word when voices began to rise, making the space around the mosque as much a fabric of peacemaking as the hall within.
