Tentang

Coventry, the English Midlands city famously rebuilt after the wartime destruction of its mediaeval cathedral, has been home to a substantial community from Pakistan and Kashmir since the post war decades when textile mills, engineering works and the Rootes motor plant drew skilled workers from Mirpur, Jhelum, Sialkot, Azad Kashmir and beyond. The Islamic Brotherhood Pakistan and Kashmir Family Centre serves this diaspora with Friday prayers, weekend Qur'an classes, mother tongue lessons in Urdu and Punjabi, a women's circle for mental health support and a youth programme for teenagers. Kashmir's Islamic heritage runs through the teachings of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, whose fourteenth century arrival in the Kashmir valley shaped the spiritual culture of the region, and through the Rishi saints whose names still grace shrines across Srinagar, Pampore and Charar i Sharif. Architecturally the Coventry centre occupies a refurbished industrial property in the Foleshill area, with a carpeted prayer hall accommodating several hundred worshippers, a women's section on the first floor behind a timber screen and classrooms laid out along the corridors. The mihrab is simple, framed by painted tile work in green and cream, and the mimbar is modest in keeping with the British setting. Daily prayers draw taxi drivers, factory workers, students and retirees, Jumu'ah sermons are delivered in English with opening supplications in Arabic and closing reflections in Urdu, and Ramadan evenings bring iftar shared across generations with pakoras, fruit chaat, biryani, and samosas generously contributed by volunteer cooks. Eid prayers fill the Foleshill sports hall nearby, and zakat collected here supports local food banks, Kashmir earthquake relief and orphan sponsorships. Non Muslim neighbours are welcomed for open days with short talks and Kashmiri kahwa tea. Landmarks within reach include the ruins of the old Coventry Cathedral, the modern Coventry Cathedral beside it, the Transport Museum recording the city's motor heritage and the canal paths that lead towards Hawkesbury Junction. The centre offers a warm threshold into the diaspora experience shaped by Kashmir's highlands and the British Midlands. A memorial corner inside the centre honours the Kashmiri poet Habba Khatoon with a quotation from her verses painted on ceramic tile, and the Urdu poetry circle that meets monthly takes its inspiration from her, from Mahjoor and from Amin Kamil, preserving Kashmiri literary heritage within the Coventry diaspora of Midland weekenders alike.
