About
Bošnjački Džemat Da'wa is a Brussels mosque that serves the Bosnian Muslim community, giving it a space to gather, worship and preserve a specific Balkan Islamic heritage in the heart of the Belgian capital. The word džemat, equivalent to the Arabic jama'ah, means "congregation" and is used in Bosnia to refer both to a local religious community and, by extension, to its mosque. Da'wa, meaning invitation or call to faith, adds another layer: the mosque sees itself not only as a place for existing believers but as a welcoming space where Islam can be explained, shared and revisited with sincerity. The Bosnian Muslim community in Brussels consists of families shaped by waves of migration, including those who came as workers in the late twentieth century and those who arrived as refugees during and after the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The mosque provides the five daily prayers, Friday sermons usually in Bosnian with Qur'anic recitation in Arabic, and the major observances of the Islamic calendar, including the two Eids, Mawlid commemorations and Laylat al-Qadr vigils. The interior of the prayer hall often includes carpets patterned in traditional Bosnian style and calligraphy panels reflecting the long heritage of Ottoman-influenced Bosnian Islam. Qur'anic mekteb classes for children focus on basic recitation, short surahs and character education, while adult programmes explore ilmihal texts, seerah and topics relevant to Bosnian-Belgian life. Ramadan is an especially significant season, with taraweeh prayers, iftars featuring Bosnian foods such as begova čorba, pita and ćevapi, and community charitable initiatives. Weddings, sunnet celebrations, funerals and tevhid gatherings tie the mosque directly to the life cycle of its members, maintaining culturally specific forms of worship and remembrance. Relationships with the Bosnian diaspora across Europe and with Belgian civic institutions are actively maintained, and interfaith dialogue is also part of the mosque's outreach. For Bošnjački Džemat Da'wa, the ultimate aim is to nurture a confident, welcoming community rooted in Bosnian Islamic tradition and engaged with its Brussels context. At Bošnjački Džemat Da'wa, a particular effort is made during the last ten nights of Ramadan to host traditional Bosnian mukabele sessions, in which the Qur'an is recited in its entirety over the course of the month, drawing worshippers from across Belgium.
