Preserving a quiet spiritual heritage in the surrounding area, Мечеть имени Махмуда Кашгари welcomes worshippers throughout the day.. Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, lies in the foothills of the Ala Too range of the Tien Shan mountains at an elevation of roughly eight hundred metres. The city was founded as a caravan stop along the road between the Fergana valley and the Kazakh steppe, and it developed during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries into the political, educational, and cultural heart of the Kyrgyz nation. Mahmud al Kashgari, born near Kashgar in present day western China around the year 1005, is remembered as the author of the Diwan Lughat al Turk, the earliest surviving comprehensive Arabic dictionary of Turkic languages. His meticulous scholarship preserved hundreds of proverbs, poems, and grammatical observations from Central Asian peoples, and his careful linking of Turkic expressions with the principles of the faith continues to inspire modern Kyrgyz, Kazakh, and Uzbek scholars. Naming a Bishkek mosque in his honour celebrates a great servant of both Islamic learning and Turkic culture. Kyrgyz mosque architecture often blends Central Asian motifs with modern structural practice. A central dome painted pale blue or turquoise, two slender minarets, pointed arched windows framed by carved plasterwork, and tiled entryways decorated with floral motifs taken from traditional shyrdak felt carpets shape the building's exterior. Inside, patterned Kyrgyz woollen carpets donated by local families cover the floor, a modest mihrab points southwest toward Makkah, and a wooden minbar stands ready for the Friday khutbah delivered in Kyrgyz and Arabic. Daily prayer times for the Mahmud Kashgari Mosque in Bishkek, along with its address, a location map, and helpful notes for visitors, are presented on this page for residents of the capital, students at the Kyrgyz universities, and travellers passing through Central Asia on the old Silk Road. Bishkek is celebrated for the Ala Too Square, the Osh Bazaar, and the snow capped mountains visible from almost every street. After Jumu'ah, worshippers at this mosque often enjoy bowls of lagman noodles, rounds of fresh lepyoshka bread, and cups of aromatic black tea prepared by community volunteers eager to extend the ancient Kyrgyz welcome to every guest from near or far.
