Tentang

Serving the thriving Bangladeshi community of Birmingham in the English Midlands, the Medina Mosque of the Bangladeshi Islamic Social Organisation offers a welcoming house of worship within one of the oldest centres of south Asian settlement in the United Kingdom. Birmingham rose to prominence as the workshop of the Victorian empire, manufacturing tools, coins, weapons, and the jewellery that gave its famous Quarter its lasting name. During the twentieth century the city welcomed tens of thousands of Bengali and later Bangladeshi workers, who took up positions in foundries, textile mills, restaurants, and small family businesses across the busy urban districts.

The word Medina in the organisation's chosen name evokes the luminous city of the Prophet, where the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, established the first Muslim community, built his noble mosque, and raised the banner of justice between all believers of every tribe and tongue. Naming a masjid Medina is an act of loving aspiration, asking that the character of the community within its walls should reflect the bonds of brotherhood, the generous hospitality, and the gentle courtesy that once marked daily life in the sacred city of the Ansar.

The building offers a spacious prayer hall with carpeted floor aligned towards the qiblah, separate facilities for sisters, a weekend Qur'an school for children, and a small library stocked with works of tafsir, the seerah, and hadith collections. Jumu'ah draws taxi drivers, restaurant workers, shopkeepers, engineers, doctors, and students from the nearby University of Birmingham into a single congregation. During Ramadan the community shares nightly iftars of rice, dhal, beef curry, and the beloved sweet payesh that every Bangladeshi grandmother knows how to prepare with patience.

Accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the Birmingham masjid appear on this page, along with its address, a location map, and practical notes that assist residents of the English Midlands, visitors to the city's markets and museums, commuters travelling through the second largest city in the country, and travellers from the wider British Bangladeshi community to attend the warm and friendly congregational worship offered here throughout every season of the year.
