Rising above the fishing settlements of Bereeda along Somalia's northeastern coast, Masjid Alula al Markazi serves as the principal congregational masjid for the town of Alula and its surrounding hamlets in the Bari region of Puntland. Alula itself is a place of ancient significance, its sheltered bay having received dhows trading frankincense, myrrh, and textiles for millennia, its coastal cliffs concealing the nests of Egyptian vultures and the caves where generations of scholars and ascetics sought solitude. The Puntland coast holds a venerable place in Somali Islamic memory, with genealogies tracing local lineages to early companions and successors who crossed the Red Sea during the first centuries of Islam. Masjid Alula al Markazi, whose name literally means the central masjid of Alula, stands as the heart of communal worship, its bleached white walls reflecting the fierce coastal sun, its dome and minaret visible from boats returning with the day's catch. Past the entrance the hall is covered in rich green and red, the mihrab framed with calligraphy rendered in the thick ruq'ah script, with the mimbar worked in hardwood brought from abroad that has weathered the salty air. Daily prayers punctuate the fishing rhythm, with many worshippers arriving still bearing the scent of the sea, and Jumu'ah fills the hall with men whose white macawis and embroidered koofi caps create a vivid tableau of coastal devotion. Ramadan sees long tables laid with sambuusa, muufo bread fresh from clay ovens, camel milk, and dates traded from across the Gulf of Aden. Tarawih prayers unfold beneath a sky brilliant with stars, unobscured by the light pollution of larger cities. Eid mornings bring the community to the open ground between the masjid and the shore, the khutbah drifting over the waves. Visitors venturing to the remote Bari coast for its seabird colonies or the archaeological sites of the ancient incense trade will find the masjid a focal point of hospitality, where travellers are welcomed with tea and dates after the evening prayer concludes. The masjid endures as a quiet coastal beacon whose call rises above the boats, nets, and sea spray of this remote Puntland shoreline, drawing worshippers from generations whose ancestors have prayed here for as long as living memory can reach back into the ancient Somali Islamic past.
