Situated near the village of Safad al Battikh in the Bint Jbeil district of Lebanon's Nabatiye governorate, Masjid al Shahid al Thani bears the name of al Shahid al Thani, the second martyr, the honoured jurist Zayn al Din al Juba'i al Amili who was executed by Ottoman authorities in the year nine hundred sixty six of the hijra and whose writings on fiqh, ethics, and spiritual discipline continue to be studied across the Lebanese and Iraqi seminaries. Jabal Amil, the hilly region of southern Lebanon where Safad al Battikh sits, has been celebrated for centuries as a nursery of scholarship, producing generations of muhaqqiqin, fuqaha, and philosophers whose influence reached Najaf, Qom, and Hyderabad. Nabatiye governorate, of which Bint Jbeil district is the southernmost part, lies along the frontier with Palestine and has experienced many hardships during decades of conflict, yet its villages remain centres of religious learning and quiet community life. The masjid honouring al Shahid al Thani combines a simple square prayer hall under a gently arched dome, a single modest minaret in pale local stone, and a shaded courtyard with a fountain for wudu. Inside, the prayer hall is covered with dark red carpets, the mihrab is lined with blue Kashan tile, and framed calligraphy bearing verses from the Qur'an and selections from the writings of al Shahid al Thani adorns the walls. Daily prayers gather villagers, students of the nearby hawzah schools, and families returning from work in Saida and Tyre. Jumu'ah draws a larger congregation, with the khutbah delivered in Arabic on themes of patience and the dignity of learning. Ramadan brings taraweeh, communal iftars of manakish, tabbouleh, and kibbeh, and Qur'an completion ceremonies. The complex also hosts commemorative gatherings during Muharram, recitations of the biography of al Shahid al Thani, marriage contracts, and funerals. Visitors should dress modestly, keep phones silent, and approach the elders with the warmth that southern Lebanese hospitality cherishes. A commemorative gathering is held each year on the anniversary of the martyrdom of al Shahid al Thani, may God have mercy on him, during which his short but influential biography is read aloud, his ethical counsels are recited, and students offer verses in his praise, while elders remember the many sons of Jabal Amil who travelled to Najaf, Qom, and Beirut to continue the scholarly tradition preserved in his writings.
