Rising above the Bawshar district of Muscat, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is the principal house of worship of the Sultanate of Oman and one of the most magnificent religious buildings on the Arabian Peninsula. Commissioned by Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said in 1992 and inaugurated in 2001 after six years of careful construction, the mosque was envisioned as both a place of prayer and a gift from the late Sultan to his nation, reflecting his belief that a great mosque should serve as a symbol of faith, scholarship, and national unity. Its name honours the vision of a ruler who sought to bring together the spiritual heritage of Oman and the wider Islamic world in a single monumental space.

The mosque occupies a vast site covering more than four hundred thousand square metres, with the main prayer hall capable of accommodating up to twenty thousand worshippers when the courtyards and outer galleries are included. The central dome rises to a height of fifty metres and is flanked by five towering minarets, symbolising the five pillars of Islam. The building itself is constructed from Indian sandstone, its warm hues rising from carefully manicured gardens that combine Islamic geometric design with native Omani plant life, including date palms, frankincense trees, and flowering jasmine.

The interior of the prayer hall is widely regarded as a masterpiece of craftsmanship. A single hand woven Persian carpet covers the entire floor of the main hall, measuring more than four thousand square metres and taking over six hundred weavers nearly four years to complete. Above the congregation hangs an enormous Swarovski crystal chandelier, fourteen metres tall and weighing several tonnes, illuminating walls decorated with marble inlay, Quranic calligraphy, and delicate floral motifs that draw inspiration from Persian, Turkish, Moroccan, and Omani artistic traditions. Inscribed across the mihrab and along the qibla wall are verses of the Holy Quran and words of praise for the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, whose example continues to shape the devotional life of the Omani people.

The mosque hosts the five daily prayers throughout the year, with Friday prayers drawing congregations from across Muscat and the surrounding governorates. It plays a particularly significant role during Ramadan, when nightly Taraweeh prayers fill the prayer hall and the extensive outdoor courtyards with worshippers seeking closeness to God during the blessed month. The two Eid prayers, marking the end of Ramadan and the Day of Sacrifice during Hajj, are held in the mosque with tens of thousands of worshippers in attendance.

Beyond its role as a place of worship, the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque operates an Islamic information centre, a library with tens of thousands of volumes, and regular lectures on Islamic scholarship, comparative religion, and Omani heritage. Non Muslim visitors are welcomed outside of prayer times, with guided tours helping to foster understanding of Islamic culture in a spirit of openness that reflects the character of Oman itself. For residents of Muscat and travellers alike, the mosque offers serenity, beauty, and depth of devotion rarely matched anywhere along the Gulf coast.
