Grand Mosque Ali Albya, located in Baghdad, bears a name that appears to honour Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth rightly guided caliph, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace). Ali is revered across the Muslim world for his deep knowledge, courage, piety and closeness to the Prophet, and his memory carries particular weight in Iraq, where he established his caliphate and where his revered shrine in Najaf draws millions of visitors. Naming a mosque after Ali is thus an expression of profound respect and love. As a "Grand Mosque", the building is large enough to serve as a central local institution, hosting the five daily prayers, Friday congregations, Eid gatherings and the full calendar of Islamic observances. The prayer hall is arranged carefully with carpets oriented towards the qibla, a mihrab marking the direction of Mecca and a minbar used for the weekly sermon. A minaret marks its presence on the surrounding street. The imam leads prayers in the refined Iraqi style of Qur'anic recitation, and khutbahs delivered in Arabic often draw on Ali's life, wisdom and eloquent sayings, including those preserved in collections such as Nahj al-Balagha. Ramadan is a particularly rich season, with long taraweeh prayers, shared iftars and programmes dedicated to Qur'anic study and the lives of the Prophet and his family. Qur'anic education for children is a central feature, with classes teaching tajwid, memorisation and basic Islamic studies. Adult study circles explore tafsir, seerah and fiqh, with special attention to the lives of the Prophet's household. Charitable work includes zakat collection, support for widows and orphans, and aid for families in hardship, understood as a continuation of the ethos of justice and generosity that Ali embodied. Weddings, aqiqahs and funerals are coordinated through the mosque. For its worshippers, Grand Mosque Ali Albya is a daily tribute to a figure whose memory illumines Iraqi faith. Community members at Grand Mosque Ali Albya often recall with particular warmth the annual reading evening devoted to selected sayings of Imam Ali, during which a senior scholar offers brief but thoughtful commentary on their meaning for daily life and character.
