About

Grand Mosque Sd Bn Aby Wqas, located in Baghdad, bears a name honouring Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, one of the ten companions of the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace) promised paradise during their lifetimes. Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas was a close cousin of the Prophet, among the earliest converts to Islam, a renowned archer and strategist, and later the commander of the Muslim armies that achieved the historic victory at al-Qadisiyyah in the Muslim conquest of Iraq. Iraqi Muslims therefore feel a particularly strong personal connection to his memory, and naming a mosque after him ties the worshippers of Baghdad directly to the figures whose efforts brought Islam to their land. As a "Grand Mosque", the building is large enough to serve as a significant local institution, hosting the five daily prayers, Friday congregations, Eid gatherings and the full calendar of Islamic observances. The prayer hall is arranged with carpets oriented carefully towards the qibla, a clear mihrab and a minbar used for weekly sermons. A minaret marks its presence on the surrounding street. The imam leads prayers in the classical Iraqi style of Qur'anic recitation, and khutbahs delivered in Arabic often draw from the lives of the companions, including Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, to illustrate lessons on courage, faith and sincere service. Ramadan is particularly rich, with long taraweeh prayers, shared iftars and programmes dedicated to Qur'anic study and early Islamic history. Qur'anic education for children is a central activity, with classes teaching tajwid, memorisation and basic Islamic studies. Adult study circles explore tafsir, seerah and fiqh. Charitable work includes zakat collection, support for widows and orphans, and aid for families in need. Weddings, aqiqahs and funerals are organised through the mosque. For its worshippers, this Grand Mosque serves as a living thanksgiving to a companion whose efforts helped plant Islam deep in the soil of Iraq. A notable annual event at Grand Mosque Sd Bn Aby Wqas is the communal reading of episodes from the early Muslim conquests, focused not on glorifying conflict but on highlighting the justice, restraint and mercy that the Prophet's companions sought to uphold even in difficult times.
