Grand Mosque Alzhraʾ, located in Baghdad, carries a name honouring Fatimah az-Zahra, the beloved daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace), wife of Ali ibn Abi Talib, and mother of the Prophet's grandsons al-Hasan and al-Husayn. Az-Zahra, "the Radiant One", is revered across the Muslim world for her piety, patience and closeness to the Prophet, and she is counted among the greatest women in Islamic history. Naming a mosque after her is an act of deep love and reverence, honouring a figure whose life is seen as a model of faith, humility and devotion. As a "Grand Mosque", the building is large enough to serve as a significant local institution, hosting the five daily prayers, Friday congregations, Eid gatherings and the full calendar of Islamic observances. The prayer hall is arranged carefully with carpets oriented towards the qibla, a mihrab marking the direction of Mecca and a minbar used for weekly sermons. A minaret and often a dome mark the mosque's architectural profile. The imam leads prayers in the refined Iraqi style of Qur'anic recitation, and khutbahs delivered in Arabic often return to themes of family, love for the Prophet's household, and the role of women in Islamic history. Ramadan is a particularly rich season, with long taraweeh prayers, shared iftars and programmes dedicated to Qur'anic study and the lives of the Prophet and his family. Qur'anic education for children is a central feature of the mosque's routine, with classes teaching tajwid, memorisation and basic Islamic studies. Adult study circles explore tafsir, seerah and fiqh, and special attention is often given to the biographies of the noble women of early Islam. Charitable work includes zakat collection, support for widows and orphans, and aid for families in need. For its congregants, Grand Mosque Alzhraʾ is a daily reminder of the radiant example of Fatimah, and of the central role of love and devotion within Islamic life. A small but beloved tradition of Grand Mosque Alzhraʾ is the annual gathering of women around the commemoration of Sayyida Fatimah, featuring recitations, short talks and a shared meal that honours her example of quiet strength and devotion.
