Grand Mosque Mr, located in Baghdad, bears a short but evocative name that likely honours Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second righteous caliph and one of the most revered figures in Islamic history. Umar is celebrated for his firm justice, his strategic wisdom, his personal humility and his tireless concern for the welfare of the people under his care. Among the Prophet Muhammad's (may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace) companions, he stood out for his willingness to walk at night through the streets of Madinah to check on the poor and vulnerable, and for his famous declaration of responsibility for every soul in his domain.
