Rising above the small city of Argun in the Chechen Republic of the Russian Federation, the Mosque of Aymani Hajji Kadyrova carries the name of the mother of the Chechen head of state, herself known locally for her charitable initiatives. Chechnya occupies the rugged north eastern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains, a land whose Muslim identity was forged through centuries of devotion passed down among mountain aul villages. Inside, large chandeliers hang from a painted dome, soft Persian carpets woven in shades of red and green cover the floor, and Thuluth calligraphy in gold encircles the main prayer hall citing verses on divine mercy and the honour of the ahl al bayt.
