Tentang
Within the Mamak district of Ankara, the Turkish capital whose rolling hills carry the layered memory of Hittite, Phrygian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman civilisations, the Ahmet Ziyauddin Gümüshanevi Hazretleri Mosque and Külliye honours one of the great Ottoman era scholars of the nineteenth century. Ahmad Ziya al Din al Gümüshanevi, may God have mercy on him, was born in the Black Sea town of Gümüshane, taught in Istanbul, and gathered around him a devoted circle of students whose scholarly legacy shaped several generations of Anatolian religious learning. His hadith compilations and commentary remain in active study across Turkey today.
A Külliye, a complex combining a mosque with teaching rooms, a soup kitchen, a library, and often a graveyard, is a classic feature of Ottoman urban planning, dating back to the great Süleymaniye and Fatih complexes of old Istanbul. Modern Turkish Külliyes continue that tradition with considerable care, providing an integrated space for worship, study, and charity within the expanding suburbs of cities like Ankara.
The building follows a contemporary Ottoman revival idiom. Pale cream stone walls carry the central dome in soft grey lead over a drum pierced with calligraphic roundels bearing the names of the Rashidun caliphs, may God be pleased with them, and of the two grandsons of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, along with other cherished names. Four half domes flank the main dome in the classical Sinan inspired cascade, and two slender pencil minarets in the Ottoman pattern flank the main entrance. A paved forecourt with a central ablution fountain welcomes worshippers.
Inside, the hall is luminous and spacious. Crystal chandeliers hang from a painted dome decorated with floral calligraphy, long rows of red İzmir carpet fill the floor, and a mihrab of carved Bursa marble stands against a wall of Iznik tile in the classic turquoise, cobalt, and coral palette. A carved walnut mimbar with geometric inlay and an Ottoman style hünkâr mahfili royal gallery complete the composition.
Classrooms, a quiet library, and charitable soup kitchen adjoin the mosque, carrying forward the integrated spirit of the Külliye tradition for a growing Ankara neighbourhood.
