Tentang

Moskee an Nour takes its name from one of the most beautiful names of Allah, An Nur, the Light, mentioned in the famous Ayat an Nur in surah an Nur of the noble Qur'an which begins Allah is the light of the heavens and the earth, the likeness of His light is as a niche within which is a lamp. This luminous verse has inspired Muslim mystics, poets, and scholars for fourteen centuries, and the mosque in Amsterdam bearing this name invites its congregation to aspire to become vessels of divine light in the midst of their bustling European city. The mosque serves a mixed community of Moroccan, Arab, and other Muslims living in Amsterdam, offering a welcoming atmosphere for worshippers across linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Housed in an adapted urban building within the Dutch capital's historic fabric, the mosque opens onto a quiet street where worshippers arrive on foot, by bicycle, or by tram for the five daily prayers. The prayer hall inside is carpeted in rich tones, oriented toward the qibla with precise saf lines, and illuminated by soft overhead lighting that evokes the mosque's luminous name. A dignified mihrab indicates the direction of Makkah and a small mimbar stands ready for the Friday khutbah delivered in Arabic with Dutch explanation. Ablution facilities serve both men and women, and a separate women's prayer section accommodates sisters with full modesty. The mosque offers daily prayers, Jumuah, Qur'an recitation classes, tajwid and tafsir studies, Arabic and Dutch language support, children's Islamic education, marriage solemnisation, janazah services, and zakat distribution. Ramadan at Moskee an Nour becomes a month of particular radiance with nightly tarawih prayers, communal iftars breaking the fast together, Qur'an khatm by the final nights, and itikaf in the last ten days as worshippers seek Laylatul Qadr and draw closer to the Lord of Light. Moskee an Nour's annual iftar for Dutch interfaith neighbours has become a celebrated local event, drawing guests from Christian churches, Jewish synagogues, and secular community organisations in the surrounding Amsterdam neighbourhood to share a Ramadan meal and learn about Islamic fasting practices, with the mosque's imam offering a brief introduction to Ramadan followed by the breaking of fast with dates and water and a generous meal of Moroccan, Arab, and international dishes prepared by volunteering aunties.
