Mescid I Aksa Moskee in Amsterdam takes its name from the Masjid al Aqsa, the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, the third holiest site in Islam and the first qibla toward which the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam and the earliest Muslims directed their prayers before the qibla was changed to the Kaaba in Makkah. The Masjid al Aqsa is also the site from which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam ascended through the heavens on the miraculous Isra and Mi'raj journey, and naming a mosque after this blessed site in the Noble Sanctuary of Jerusalem invokes its deep spiritual significance and the responsibility of every Muslim to remember Jerusalem in their hearts and prayers. The mosque in Amsterdam serves a Turkish Muslim congregation and operates within the Dutch tradition of mosques established in adapted urban buildings, typically former shops, warehouses, or community halls repurposed and blessed for Islamic worship. The interior is arranged in the classical manner with carpeted prayer hall oriented toward the qibla, an inscribed mihrab, a small mimbar for the khatib, and a separate area for women worshippers. Qur'an shelves line the back wall, and a small library provides texts in Turkish, Arabic, and Dutch. Community programmes include daily prayers with muadhin calling the adhan, Friday khutbah in Turkish with elements in Arabic and sometimes Dutch, Qur'an and tajwid classes for children and adults, Turkish language support, Dutch integration classes, marriage and funeral services, and zakat collection and distribution. Ramadan is observed with particular devotion, with long tarawih prayers, nightly iftars featuring Turkish specialties, and itikaf in the final ten nights. The name Aksa keeps before the congregation the enduring connection of the Muslim ummah to Jerusalem across every generation. The walls of Mescid I Aksa Moskee frequently display photographs of Jerusalem and the Masjid al Aqsa, reminding worshippers of the blessed site whose name the mosque carries and of the ongoing importance of Jerusalem in Muslim consciousness, and special duas for the wellbeing of the people of Palestine are often included in Friday sermons, linking the small Amsterdam congregation to concerns of the global Muslim ummah across continents.
