IGMG Mevlana Moskee in Amsterdam is affiliated with the Islamische Gemeinschaft Milli Görüş, one of the major Turkish Islamic umbrella organisations active in Europe which operates mosques and community centres across Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France serving primarily the Turkish Muslim diaspora. The mosque takes its name from Mevlana Jalal al Din Rumi, the thirteenth century Persian Sunni poet, jurist, and Sufi master whose mystical verses in the Masnavi are recited across the Muslim world and have inspired seekers for eight centuries. Naming the mosque after Mevlana invokes his legacy of love for Allah, devotion to the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam, and inclusive spiritual teaching that drew disciples of every background to the Mevlevi path in Konya. The mosque serves the Turkish Dutch Muslim community of Amsterdam with five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah gathering, Qur'an recitation and tajwid classes, Turkish language instruction, Islamic education for children and youth, Dutch language and integration support, marriage and funeral services, and zakat distribution. The prayer hall inside the adapted urban building is laid with carpets in the Turkish style, adorned with Ottoman inspired calligraphy naming Allah and Muhammad and the rightly guided caliphs, furnished with a mihrab and mimbar, and equipped with a separate women's section. The library holds texts in Turkish, Arabic, and Dutch covering fiqh, tafsir, seerah, tasawwuf, and Islamic history. During Ramadan the mosque extends its programming with nightly tarawih prayers, community iftars that often include Turkish specialties like pide, çorba, and baklava, and itikaf observed during the final ten blessed nights. Mevlid gatherings commemorating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam are observed in the traditional Turkish manner with recitation of the beloved Süleyman Çelebi Mevlid poem, evoking the heritage of Ottoman devotional life. The IGMG Mevlana Moskee participates in Amsterdam's annual Rumi commemoration events celebrating the seventeenth day of Shawwal, traditionally observed as the death anniversary of the great Sufi master, with readings from the Masnavi and the Divan e Shams Tabrizi drawing audiences from the Turkish community and beyond, a fitting tribute to the poet saint whose universal teachings on love and divine union continue to resonate across centuries and cultures.
