El Tawheed

El Tawheed, whose name derives from the foundational Islamic concept of tawhid, the absolute oneness of Allah, stands in Amsterdam as a mosque whose very name declares the central article of Muslim faith. Tawhid is the cornerstone of the Islamic creed, expressed in the shahadah la ilaha illallah, there is no deity but Allah, and naming a mosque after this principle makes the building itself a perpetual witness to divine unity. The mosque serves a diverse Amsterdam Muslim congregation with Moroccan and other backgrounds represented among its worshippers, though all united in the common call of tawhid that transcends ethnic or linguistic distinction. The building has a history in Amsterdam's Muslim community as a centre of dawah, Qur'anic learning, and communal worship, though it has at times been the subject of public controversy in the Dutch press. The prayer hall inside is simple and dignified, with carpets laid toward the qibla, a mihrab, a small mimbar, and shelves holding Qur'an copies and works of Islamic scholarship. Ablution facilities allow worshippers to prepare for prayer, and a women's section provides modest worship space for sisters. The mosque's educational programme includes daily Qur'an recitation classes, tajwid lessons, fiqh study, and seerah sessions, as well as khutbahs delivered in Arabic with Dutch translation when needed. Community services include marriage solemnisation, funeral rites, zakat collection and distribution, and welfare assistance for needy families. The month of Ramadan is observed with particular devotion, with nightly tarawih prayers that often extend late into the evening, iftar meals shared by the congregation, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf during the final ten nights as worshippers seek the blessed Laylatul Qadr. Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha bring festive gatherings where families celebrate the completion of worship and the grace of divine oneness. Community outreach programmes at El Tawheed include initiatives supporting Dutch converts to Islam through classes, mentorship, and practical assistance as they navigate the transition to a new faith community, reflecting the mosque's belief that every sincere declaration of tawhid is a precious moment deserving of nurture and support from the established ummah, and many lasting friendships have formed across cultural lines through these supportive programmes.
