El Ouma, whose name derives from the Arabic word ummah meaning the community or nation of believers, serves as a mosque and community centre in Amsterdam gathering Muslims from across the global ummah into a single place of worship in the Dutch capital. The choice of name expresses the inclusive aspiration of the mosque to welcome Muslims of every origin, whether Moroccan, Turkish, Egyptian, Somali, Surinamese, Afghan, or Dutch convert, into the common bond of faith that transcends national and ethnic lines. This vision echoes the famous farewell sermon of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam in which he declared that no Arab has superiority over a non Arab nor a white over a black except in taqwa, a principle that the mosque's leadership strives to embody in its daily operations. The building is a modest urban structure in one of Amsterdam's neighbourhoods, adapted from a former commercial or residential use and fitted out as a house of worship with carpeted floors, prayer lines, a mihrab, and a small mimbar. Ablution facilities are compact but sufficient, and a small library holds books in Arabic, Dutch, English, and Turkish covering the major disciplines of Islamic knowledge. The mosque programme includes five daily prayers, Friday khutbah in Arabic with Dutch translation, Qur'an and tajwid classes for children and adults, and conversion support for Dutch reverts exploring their new faith. Social activities include visits to the sick, arrangements for janazah and burial according to Islamic rites, assistance for new immigrants with paperwork and housing, and charitable distribution during Ramadan. The month of fasting transforms El Ouma into a hive of activity with shared iftars, tarawih prayers, Qur'an study circles, and the beautiful sight of worshippers from every corner of the world praying shoulder to shoulder. Volunteers at El Ouma host occasional outreach events open to Dutch neighbours of other faiths, offering information about Islam, answering questions with patience and good humour, and sharing coffee and tea with visitors in the spirit of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam who was known for gentle engagement with those outside the faith community, an approach that has helped the mosque build warm relations with its surrounding Amsterdam neighbourhood and dispel misconceptions about Muslim life.
