Tentang

Within the sprawling Smouha Sporting Club in eastern Alexandria, a compact yet well appointed mosque offers athletes, members and staff a place to perform their daily prayers without leaving the leafy compound that occupies a portion of the former Smouha estate. The club takes its name from the Baghdadi Jewish entrepreneur Joseph Smouha, whose drained swamplands became one of the city's most elegant residential and sporting districts during the first half of the twentieth century, and after the revolution the club opened its facilities to the Egyptian public as a sports and cultural institution. The mosque was added when members petitioned for a dedicated prayer space, and it has since become a much loved corner of the club's grounds. Alexandria itself, the ancient Iskandariya founded by Alexander of Macedon, received Islam during the caliphate of Umar ibn al Khattab, may God be pleased with him, through the armies of Amr ibn al As, may God be pleased with him, and the city has since produced luminaries such as Imam al Busiri, author of the celebrated Burdah poem in praise of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. The club mosque reflects a modest neo Mamluk vocabulary, with a single small dome, an ablaq masonry pattern of alternating light and dark stone bands and a slim minaret topped with a brass crescent. Inside, the hall is carpeted in cool green with ivory prayer markings, and the mihrab is decorated with Qur'anic calligraphy executed in ivory on a sea blue ground that reflects the nearby Mediterranean. The imam is often a club member rather than an official employee, giving the sermons an intimate and practical tone suited to athletes balancing training with faith. Jumu'ah brings together footballers, tennis players, swim coaches and ordinary members in one row, a vivid illustration of equality before God. During Ramadan the club arranges light iftars at poolside and an evening of tarawih held outdoors under the stars. Visitors attending club events are welcome to pray here, dressing modestly and leaving their sports gear in the changing rooms before entering.
