Within the coastal Mediterranean city of Alexandria in Egypt, the Mosque of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, may God's mercy be upon him, honours one of the most celebrated jurists and hadith scholars of the early Muslim community, a figure whose steadfastness under the persecution of the mihna and whose massive collection al Musnad continue to shape classical Islamic scholarship. Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE and once the wondrous intellectual capital of the ancient Mediterranean with its Library and Pharos lighthouse, entered the Muslim era through the conquests of Amr ibn al As, may God be pleased with him, in 641 CE. Since then the city has remained a centre of learning, trade and cosmopolitan life, its coastline stretching along the Corniche from Montaza to the fort of Qaitbay on the site of the ancient lighthouse. The mosque dedicated to Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal carries the Egyptian neighbourhood style with a whitewashed facade, a central dome framed by smaller subsidiary domes, a tall slender minaret whose balconies carry loudspeakers broadcasting the adhan across the surrounding streets, and a forecourt laid with limestone slabs. Inside the prayer hall is floored in deep red carpet, the mihrab is framed with carved plaster bearing Qur'anic verses, and the mimbar is of carved mahogany. Daily prayers gather merchants, civil servants, fishermen and students from nearby schools, while Jumu'ah fills the hall with the khutbah in Arabic. Ramadan brings iftar tables along the forecourt featuring ful, tamiyya and kunafa, tarawih prayers led by reciters trained in the Egyptian qirah tradition and vigils of laylat al Qadr. Eid mornings see family gatherings with festive prayer. Visitors to Alexandria can pair the mosque with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Roman amphitheatre at Kom el Dikka and the Corniche stretching along the sparkling Mediterranean. Alexandrian devotional tradition particularly honours the recitation of the Qur'an in the Warsh and Qaloon readings, and during Ramadan the mosque's reciters often include students from the famed Mahmoud Khalil al Hussary Institute. The mosque library preserves rare editions of classical hadith works published by the old presses of Bulaq and Cairo, attracting occasional researchers interested in the history of Islamic publishing in Egypt. A stone bench in the forecourt, shaded by an ancient sycamore, offers a favourite resting place for elders enjoying the afternoon breeze off the sparkling Mediterranean.
