Gracing a quiet street of the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, Masjid Sidi Muhammad al Shatbi honours one of the city's beloved local saints and gives its name to an entire Alexandrian quarter, al Shatbi. Alexandria itself was founded by Alexander of Macedon in 331 before the common era and grew into one of the greatest cities of late antiquity. After its peaceful opening by the Muslim commander Amr ibn al As, may God be pleased with him, in 641 of the common era, the city became a centre of trade, scholarship, and Islamic devotion whose Friday prayers were once attended by thousands along the harbour front and inland districts.

Sidi Muhammad al Shatbi was a respected teacher, reciter, and scholar whose grave has long been visited by Alexandrians seeking barakah, a spiritual blessing, and whose name still adorns the surrounding neighbourhood. Dedicating a masjid to his memory preserves the ancient Egyptian custom of honouring righteous local scholars, while always directing the worship inside firmly and exclusively to God alone, as commanded by the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and understood by the Companions, may God be pleased with them. The visitor enters with salaam and leaves with renewed intention to pursue knowledge and modesty.

Architecturally, the mosque combines Ottoman and Egyptian elements typical of Alexandria's older quarters. A slender minaret rises above whitewashed walls, rounded arches frame the windows, and marble steps lead to a carpeted prayer hall where a mihrab of inlaid tilework faces the qiblah. A small courtyard with a fountain offers shade, and women enter through a separate door to their own section above the main hall.

Fishermen returning from the eastern harbour, students from the nearby university campuses, and families from the surrounding apartment blocks gather here for the five daily prayers, for Jumu'ah, and for taraweeh during Ramadan, when the sea breeze carries the recitation across the corniche. On this page visitors to Alexandria will find the current prayer times, precise address, and gentle guidance for travellers, pilgrims, and residents searching for a calm coastal corner of worship whose history blends gracefully with the daily life of one of Egypt's most storied port cities throughout all its seasons.
