Mosque Sydy Muhammad Alshatby

Gracing a quiet street of the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, Masjid Sidi Muhammad al Shatbi honours one of the city's beloved local saints and gives its name to an entire Alexandrian quarter, al Shatbi. Alexandria itself was founded by Alexander of Macedon in 331 before the common era and grew into one of the greatest cities of late antiquity. After its peaceful opening by the Muslim commander Amr ibn al As, may God be pleased with him, in 641 of the common era, the city became a centre of trade, scholarship, and Islamic devotion whose Friday prayers were once attended by thousands along the harbour front and inland districts.

Architecturally, the mosque combines Ottoman and Egyptian elements typical of Alexandria's older quarters. A small courtyard with a fountain offers shade, and women enter through a separate door to their own section above the main hall.
