Commemorating the noble companion al Aswad ibn Rabi'a, may God be pleased with him, this Qatari masjid rises in the coastal town of al Khawr in the Al Khawr municipality on the north eastern shore of Qatar, facing the Arabian Gulf. Al Khawr, whose name means simply the creek, was for centuries a small fishing and pearling port whose residents sustained themselves by diving for pearls in the warm shallow waters offshore. Today the town has grown into a pleasant coastal settlement with a modern corniche, a reconstructed old harbour, and a heritage museum that preserves the memory of the pearling era that supported Qatari life before the discovery of natural gas.
Al Aswad ibn Rabi'a, also known as Muhrrizi and by other affectionate names in the early biographical works, belonged to the generation of the blessed companions who embraced Islam during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. The companions stood with the Prophet during the campaigns of Badr, Uhud, and Khandaq, sacrificed their wealth and safety for the sake of the message, and carried the faith after his passing to the far corners of the known world. Naming a Qatari coastal mosque after such a companion honours the generation whose fidelity shaped the spiritual inheritance of every believer.
Architecturally, the mosque follows the restrained Qatari style. Cream coloured stone walls reflect the fierce Gulf sunlight, a single modest dome rises above the prayer hall, a slender minaret carries the muezzin's call across the corniche, a courtyard planted with date palms and ghaf trees welcomes worshippers beside the wudu stations, and air conditioned interior spaces offer respite from the summer heat that regularly exceeds forty five degrees Celsius. Inside, soft carpets, a simple mihrab, and calligraphic panels quoting Surah al Tawba welcome every arriving visitor.
This page lists accurate prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at al Aswad ibn Rabi'a Mosque, along with its al Khawr address and practical notes for visitors arriving from Doha by the coastal highway, from the ancient archaeological site of al Zubarah UNESCO world heritage fortress further north, or from the mangrove reserves nearby where flamingos gather in great numbers. Friday khutbahs are delivered in classical Arabic with the soft Qatari accent, and during Ramadan the congregation gathers for long tarawih led by voices trained in the Imam Malik and Imam al Shatibi schools of tajwid. Any traveller passing through the peninsula is warmly invited to step inside, to pray with the generous Qatari congregation, and to send salawat upon the Prophet and abundant blessings upon every noble companion whose quiet faithfulness once illuminated the way from blessed Medina to every distant corner of the ummah.
