Hakkında

Commemorating the late Haj Muhammad Hamdan al Hajjaj, may God have mercy on him, this Amman mosque serves the Al Jubayhah neighbourhood on the northern heights of the Jordanian capital. The honorific Haj indicates a believer who has completed the sacred pilgrimage to Makkah, and the family name Hamdan evokes the ancient tribal lineage whose branches have spread across the Levant for countless generations. Al Jubayhah grew rapidly during the twentieth century as Amman expanded northward along the ridge roads, and today it houses middle class Jordanian families, Palestinian and Iraqi refugees who rebuilt their lives there, and expatriate professionals drawn to nearby universities and hospitals. The neighbourhood's mosques tend to follow a restrained Jordanian idiom of creamy limestone cladding, a central dome on pendentives, and a minaret with a muqarnas balcony presenting a dignified face to the surrounding streets. Inside, the prayer hall of this mosque features a carpeted floor, a mihrab faced in honey toned stone, and a wooden minbar carved with geometric motifs. Five daily prayers attract a steady core of worshippers, while Jumu'ah draws the wider neighbourhood, with the khatib weaving together Qur'anic ayaat, hadith, and reflections on contemporary community life. Ramadan brings warm communal iftar meals served in the courtyard or the downstairs hall, with volunteers preparing mansaf, maqluba, and simple soups that nourish the fasting community. Taraweeh prayers fill the hall with the voices of local huffaz, and the final ten nights see the faithful maintain qiyam and extended supplication. Qur'anic memorisation classes meet for children after school, and weekend sessions address Islamic studies at an introductory level. Women worship in an upper gallery with a separate entry, and sisters circles meet regularly for study and social support. Eid prayers spill into the surrounding streets, where children gather sweets from neighbours. Nearby attractions include the Jordan University campus, the Rainbow Street cafes of Jabal Amman, the Roman amphitheatre, and the blue waters of Aqaba on the Red Sea that lie within easy reach by car. Amman's famous hospitality extends naturally toward any visitor who enters this quiet mosque for prayer, with neighbours often inviting travellers to share tea or a simple meal after the congregation has dispersed.
