Tentang

Named for al Imam Ibrahim ibn Khalid ibn Abi al Yaman al Kalbi, may God have mercy on him, a jurist of the early generations whose legal reasoning informed the classical schools, this mosque serves the historic city of al Jahra within the Muhafazat al Jahra of the State of Kuwait. Al Jahra lies at the western edge of Kuwait Bay and was the site of a decisive battle in nineteen twenty in which the Kuwaitis under Sheikh Salim al Mubarak al Sabah defended the country against Ikhwan raiders at the Red Fort, a monument that still stands as a symbol of national resolve. The city has since grown into a major residential centre with large Bedouin families maintaining traditional dwellings alongside modern suburbs. The mosque dedicated to al Imam Ibrahim al Kalbi stands as one of the many neighbourhood mosques endowed by Kuwaiti families through the Ministry of Awqaf, and its architecture reflects the clean Gulf style preferred in the country, presenting a pale sandstone facade, a broad central dome tiled in turquoise, a pair of minarets flanking the entrance and carved plaster window surrounds with geometric and floral motifs. A spacious shaded courtyard paved in cool marble welcomes worshippers, and date palms provide dappled shade for those lingering after the prayer. Inside, the main hall is carpeted in deep maroon with ivory prayer markings, lit by cut crystal chandeliers and enriched with calligraphic panels reading verses of Surah al Baqarah. The mihrab is clad in polished marble with an inscription naming the patrons and the imam after whom the mosque is called. A women's section occupies an elevated mezzanine accessed by its own staircase with full wudu facilities. Friday prayers are well attended, the khutbah conducted in classical Arabic by an appointed imam. During Ramadan the mosque hosts nightly iftars featuring Kuwaiti specialities such as jareesh, machboos laham and gers ogaili, followed by tarawih led by a hafiz. Visitors travelling along the road to the Iraq border can reach al Jahra easily, dressing modestly, removing footwear at the threshold and observing the customary Gulf courtesy of greeting the elderly who often occupy seats near the mihrab.
