Tentang

Watching over the Egyptian town of al Bajur in the fertile Nile Delta governorate of al Minufiyah, Masjid al Shaykh al Sayyid Salim carries the name of a respected local teacher whose long years of leadership touched thousands of lives along the canals and cotton fields of this storied province. Al Minufiyah is one of the great agricultural provinces of the delta, famous for cotton, vegetables, and a long tradition of producing some of Egypt's most influential thinkers, writers, and political figures, and its villages have long sent young men to study at the thousand year old Azhar mosque in Cairo before returning home as imams, teachers, and judges.
Egyptian village mosques occupy a special place in the heart of the Muslim ummah. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, prayed for the blessing of Egypt, calling it a land of barakah, and throughout Islamic history the delta has produced schools of Qur'anic recitation recognised across the Muslim world. The title al Shaykh al Sayyid indicates a respected religious figure, often used for scholars who trace their lineage to the Prophet's noble family or to early pious migrants from the Hijaz, and whose khutbahs, duas, and Qur'anic recitations still echo in the memory of their communities long after their passing.
Architecturally the mosque follows the warm modest character of a delta village masjid. A compact rectangular prayer hall is fronted by a single square minaret rising above whitewashed walls, the interior is cooled by tall wooden doors opening onto the courtyard, and decorative Qur'anic calligraphy runs along the upper walls of the prayer hall. Ceiling fans turn steadily above rows of red patterned carpets, while the mihrab is framed by restrained tilework in green and gold. Friday sermons address themes of honesty in trade, kindness to neighbours, and the rights of parents, and during Ramadan the courtyard fills with collective iftars of ful, taameya, koshari, and qatayef sweets. Accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the al Shaykh al Sayyid Salim mosque are posted on this page, offered freely to every worshipper across al Bajur and beyond.
