Rising above the Libyan coastal town of Ajdabiya in the Sha'biyat al Wahat region, Manarat Masjid al Tan'im li Tahfiz al Quran al Karim belongs to a wider network of Libyan mosques and memorisation centres dedicated to the preservation of the noble Qur'an in the hearts of the next generation. Ajdabiya itself is one of the older settlements of eastern Libya, first established during the Fatimid period, and it served as a Sahel caravan stop on the routes linking the Mediterranean coast with the oases of the interior. The surrounding landscape carries saltflats, date palm gardens, and scrub desert, and the families of Ajdabiya are proud of their long continuous residence on this strip of the Libyan coast.
The name al Tan'im evokes the sacred site outside Makkah at which pilgrims enter the state of ihram before performing umrah, and which is closely associated in hadith literature with the umrah of A'ishah (may God be pleased with her), the beloved wife of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. Naming a Libyan Qur'anic centre after al Tan'im carries a gentle evocation of pilgrimage spirit and of the prophetic household into every classroom and prayer hall. The word manarat, meaning the minaret or lighthouse, suggests that the centre shines forth the light of Qur'anic learning across the surrounding town and desert.
The compound consists of a central prayer hall, surrounding classrooms where students work through the thirty ajza of the Qur'an under the guidance of their teachers, a library of printed mushafs and basic tajwid texts, and a small office for administration. Pupils range in age from small children beginning the alphabet through older students working on ijaza certification. Friday sermons are delivered in Libyan Arabic, and during Ramadan the centre organises intensive review sessions along with collective iftars of couscous bil hout, bazin, and sweet sharbat. The Prophet said that the best of you is the one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it, and this centre embodies that teaching. Daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the Manarat al Tan'im are listed on this page for every resident and visitor.
