In the fertile delta province of Dakahlia, where the Nile's eastern branch divides into dozens of irrigation canals that feed rice, cotton and clover across flat green fields, the village of Darwah in the Aja subdistrict preserves its great congregational mosque, al Masjid al Kabir, the large mosque whose name marks its role as the village's chief house of worship. The Nile delta's Islamic heritage reaches back to the arrival of Amr ibn al As, may God be pleased with him, whose army settled Fustat and whose governance extended quickly across the provinces. Scholars from cities such as Mansoura, the district capital, and Damietta, the ancient port, have contributed to the jurisprudential and theological tradition of Egypt for more than a millennium. Architecturally the Darwah mosque reflects the delta's practical village style, with whitewashed walls rising from a base of carved limestone, a single minaret finished in cream and green tile and a low central dome raised over the prayer hall. A wide forecourt paved in pale stone welcomes worshippers, the mihrab is lined in cream marble and the mimbar is carved from carefully selected timber in the traditional pattern of three ascending steps. Daily prayers follow the calendar issued by the Ministry of Awqaf, Jumu'ah khutbah is delivered in classical Arabic with reflections drawn from the life of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and Ramadan evenings bring shared iftar tables laid across the forecourt with molokhia, stuffed pigeon, kofta and fresh baladi bread. Eid mornings draw families in freshly pressed gallabiyas, and the takbirat ring across the cotton fields from the evening before. Visitors are welcomed with warm anise tea, shoes are left on simple shelves at the threshold and modest dress is expected. Nearby lie the Mansoura battlefield where the Seventh Crusade was defeated by the forces of al Salih Ayyub, the old town of Mit Ghamr with its famous Islamic savings experiment of the nineteen sixties and the pleasant canal paths that wind between villages across Dakahlia's cultivated plain. Village elders still recount that their grandfathers would walk several kilometres on Eid mornings to pray in this same mosque even before the current building was completed, for its courtyard was the ground where the takbirat had been recited in the open for as long as anyone could remember across the generations of Darwah farmers.
