Tentang

Tero Mosque in Addis Ababa serves the Muslim residents of the Ethiopian capital, a city whose Islamic heritage reaches back across centuries and intertwines with the broader story of Islam in the Horn of Africa. Ethiopia holds a special place in Muslim memory as the land of the Najashi, the Christian king who sheltered the first Muslim migrants fleeing persecution from Makkah, and the country's Muslim communities — including Oromo, Amhara, Harari, Silte, Gurage and other groups — have maintained their own rich traditions of scholarship, Sufi practice and community life ever since. Addis Ababa, as the capital and a meeting point for many of Ethiopia's regions, hosts a significant Muslim population and a number of important mosques that anchor the faith in the city's daily life. Tero Mosque functions as a neighbourhood masjid, offering the five daily prayers in congregation and a strong Friday gathering for surrounding residents. The building is a working community mosque, with a clean prayer hall oriented toward Makkah, a clear mihrab, a simple minbar and adequate provision for men and women worshippers. Friday khutbahs are typically delivered in Amharic, Afaan Oromo or Arabic depending on the imam and congregation, and often address practical themes such as sincere worship, honest earning, the rights of parents and neighbours, the upbringing of children and the responsibilities of Muslims in a religiously plural Ethiopian society that has long balanced Christian, Muslim and traditional presences. The mosque supports religious education for children through Qur'an and Arabic classes and occasionally hosts adult halaqat. During Ramadan the masjid becomes especially active, with nightly taraweeh, shared iftars, Qur'an completion events and charitable outreach to needy families. Visitors from other backgrounds are welcomed respectfully at appointed times, and donations toward upkeep, teaching work and charitable outreach are quietly encouraged by the local volunteers who sustain the mosque's ongoing service. A distinctive feature of Muslim life in Addis Ababa is the interwoven nature of religious and national festivals, with Muslim and Christian Ethiopians often attending each other's weddings, condolence gatherings and major life events with respect, and Tero Mosque plays its small but consistent part in sustaining this delicate fabric of shared citizenship.
