Huda Masjid in Addis Ababa takes its name from the Arabic word 'huda', meaning guidance, a term central to the Qur'anic vocabulary and to the believer's daily supplication in which guidance is repeatedly asked of Allah. The first surah of the Qur'an itself is a plea for guidance, and by naming a mosque Huda, the community quietly places that plea at the heart of its identity, asking that its worshippers be guided and in turn become sources of guidance to those around them. The masjid serves a neighbourhood of the Ethiopian capital with the five daily prayers in congregation and a strong Friday gathering, drawing worshippers from nearby residences and workplaces. The building is a working community mosque, with a clean prayer hall oriented toward Makkah, a clear mihrab, a simple minbar and adequate provision for men and women worshippers, supported by a reliable ablution facility. Friday khutbahs are typically delivered in Amharic, Afaan Oromo or Arabic, sometimes in a blend, reflecting the diversity of the congregation, and often return to themes of guidance — the guidance of the Qur'an, the guidance found in following the Prophetic example, the guidance that transforms daily character, and the responsibility of parents to guide their children and of elders to guide the young. The mosque supports religious education for children through Qur'an and Arabic classes, and occasionally hosts adult halaqat on aqeedah, fiqh and seerah. During Ramadan Huda Masjid becomes a focal point of local spiritual life, with nightly taraweeh, shared iftars, Qur'an completion events and charitable outreach to needy families. Eid prayers gather families in festive clothing. Visitors from other backgrounds are welcomed respectfully at appointed times, and donations toward upkeep, teaching work and charitable outreach are quietly encouraged, as a small contribution to a mosque that asks no less than divine guidance for every worshipper who steps inside. The imam at Huda Masjid often tells new Muslims among the congregation that true guidance rarely descends in a single dramatic moment but accumulates slowly through steady practice — a prayer properly performed, a hasty word restrained, a small sadaqah given quietly — and that these tiny steps eventually compose a lifetime of direction toward Allah.
