Bearing the name of Abu bakr the Truthful, may God be content with him, and located in the village of Abu Sammadah within the Dilinjat district of Buhayra governorate, this mosque celebrates the first caliph whose unwavering support for the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, earned him the eternal title al Siddiq, the Truthful. Buhayra governorate occupies the western Delta between the Rosetta branch of the Nile and the Mediterranean coast, an agricultural heartland of cotton, rice, citrus and clover whose villages contain some of the oldest continuously cultivated land in the world. Egypt's Islamic story stretches to the opening of the country by Amr ibn al As, may God be pleased with him, and the foundation of Fustat in 641, later followed by the construction of Cairo by the Fatimids in 969. Egyptian scholarly history is among the most illustrious in the Muslim world, anchored by al Azhar whose teachers have shaped religious learning for over a thousand years, and enriched by figures such as al Layth ibn Saad, al Suyuti and countless commentators, may God have mercy upon them. Delta architecture favours sun baked brick and whitewashed walls, compact domes over mihrabs, slender minarets with multiple balconies, arcaded courtyards and reed mat covered prayer spaces during mild seasons. This village mosque incorporates such motifs in unassuming rural form. Five daily prayers gather farmers arriving from the surrounding fields of cotton and rice, Friday assemblies fill the hall with the faithful from Abu Sammadah and neighbouring hamlets, tarawih nights in Ramadan are enhanced by decorations of paper lanterns and the scent of molokhia carried from iftar homes, and Eid prayers bring the entire village to the adjoining lanes beneath the bright Delta sky. Qur'anic lessons are held later in the day. Travellers journeying from Cairo through Damanhur and on toward Alexandria will encounter hundreds of such mosques, of which this Abu Sammadah example is a humble representative of Delta devotional life. Farmers bring their harvest offerings before the fitrah distribution each Ramadan, and the mosque committee ensures that destitute families in neighbouring villages receive grain, dates and cooking oil well in advance of Eid so that every household may celebrate without anxiety.
