Al-Rifai Mosque, located in the Abu Ghurayb area on the western edge of Baghdad, bears a name linked to the revered Rifa'i Sufi tradition founded by the twelfth-century Iraqi saint Ahmad ibn Ali al-Rifa'i. Born in the Iraqi marshlands and raised in a lineage of scholars and mystics, al-Rifa'i became known for his deep humility, his love of the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace) and his emphasis on sincere service to ordinary people. The Rifa'i order remains influential throughout the Muslim world, and mosques bearing this name often serve as spiritual centres where classical scholarship, Qur'anic devotion and Sufi remembrance come together in a distinctively Iraqi blend. As a mosque, Al-Rifai offers the five daily prayers, Friday congregations and the full calendar of Islamic observances. The prayer hall is arranged carefully with carpets oriented towards the qibla, a mihrab marking the direction of Mecca and a minbar used for the weekly sermon. A minaret marks its architectural presence on the surrounding landscape. The imam leads prayers in the refined Iraqi style, and khutbahs delivered in Arabic often draw on the ethical and spiritual teachings of classical scholars, including al-Rifa'i himself. Ramadan is a particularly rich season, with long taraweeh prayers, shared iftars and programmes dedicated to Qur'anic study and Prophetic biography, sometimes accompanied by gatherings for remembrance of God in the Rifa'i tradition. Qur'anic education for children is a central feature, with classes teaching tajwid, memorisation and basic Islamic studies. Adult study circles explore tafsir, seerah, fiqh and introductions to classical Sufi ethical works. Charitable work includes zakat collection, support for widows and orphans, and aid for families in hardship, reflecting the strong tradition of service that has long characterised Rifa'i piety. Weddings, aqiqahs and funerals are coordinated through the mosque. For its congregants, Al-Rifai Mosque offers a window into a centuries-old Iraqi spiritual heritage in daily prayer. At Al-Rifai Mosque, a particularly treasured custom is the gentle recitation of classical qasa'id during special gatherings, lending an unmistakably Iraqi atmosphere of poetic devotion to evenings that worshippers often describe as among the most peaceful of their week.
