Situated within a labour accommodation complex on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, the Worker Village Mosque provides a vital place of prayer and spiritual refuge for thousands of migrant workers from across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa who have built the modern infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates through their daily labour. These workers come from Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Nepal, the Philippines, Indonesia, Egypt, Sudan, and beyond, and the mosque offers them a common Islamic home where languages dissolve into the shared devotion of the shahadah, the recitation of the Quran, and the standing rows of congregational prayer. Abu Dhabi itself, the federal capital of the UAE, has grown within two generations from a pearling settlement into a gleaming metropolis renowned for its cultural district, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and cultural institutions like the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Architecturally this worker mosque reflects a practical civic Gulf idiom, featuring rendered walls painted cream, a simple central dome, a slender minaret of octagonal form, and wide cool prayer halls served by powerful air conditioning to shield worshippers from the extreme summer heat. Inside, the mihrab is lined with smooth marble, and calligraphic friezes proclaim verses of the Quran. Daily prayers gather hundreds of labourers who rise before dawn, perform ablution in the adjacent washrooms, and stand in long rows for Fajr before boarding their buses to construction sites, warehouses, and service jobs. The Friday khutbah is delivered in Arabic with Urdu and English summaries to serve the diverse congregation, often treating themes of patience under trial, honesty in work, and remembrance of family far away. Ramadan evenings bring generous iftars sponsored by charities and community volunteers, featuring biryani, kabsa, dates, and laban, providing solace to those who fast long hours in the heat. The two Eids bring rare pauses of fellowship. Travellers can combine a visit with Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Corniche, Qasr al Hosn, and Yas Island nearby. The mosque committee coordinates remittance advice sessions, helping labourers send money safely home to their families in villages across South Asia. Volunteer medical clinics offer free consultations on Friday afternoons, a service cherished by workers unable to afford private care. During religious festivals of each worker's home country, the mosque holds special gatherings acknowledging Ramadan customs from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Egypt, and beyond, celebrating cultural diversity within unified Islamic devotion. The imam often says that in this humble hall the ummah truly meets, as languages blend into the single universal rhythm of prayer before one generous God.
