Tentang

Named in honour of Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan of the Abu Dhabi ruling house, this mosque in the emirate's capital carries the weight of a family that has guided Abu Dhabi since the eighteenth century, when the Al Nahyan branch of the Bani Yas tribe established itself on the island after the discovery of the fresh water well at al Hosn. The Al Nahyan have distinguished themselves through the endowment of mosques across the emirate, continuing the tradition begun by the late Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan, may God have mercy upon him, whose vision produced the Grand Mosque that now bears his name. Emirati religious life has always emphasised hospitality, Qur'an memorisation and the generosity expected of those whom God has favoured with wealth. The architectural tradition of Abu Dhabi draws on a long Gulf coast inheritance of pale limestone or rendered walls, compact white domes, slender minarets punctuating the cityscape, arched arcades cooling the courtyards, and careful orientation toward the qiblah so that breezes from the Gulf relieve the heat of midday. The regional motifs of carved stucco, calligraphic bands around the mihrab and dome interiors, and fine wooden doors are followed in this mosque as in others endowed by the ruling family. Five daily prayers gather a mixed congregation of Emiratis, Arab expatriates, and South Asian workers, Friday prayers draw a full house with the khutbah spoken in classical Arabic shaded by the Gulf dialect, tarawih through Ramadan extends well past midnight with eloquent reciters imported from Egypt and Morocco, and Eid mornings see boys in starched kanduras receive sweets when the two rakats finish, Qur'an schools meet During weekday hours while the masjid often hosts iftar distributions. Travellers visiting the Sheikh Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Qasr Al Hosn fort or the Louvre Abu Dhabi will discover here a quieter expression of Al Nahyan religious philanthropy. The ruling family's continuing patronage extends to scholarships for students pursuing Qur'anic memorisation and Arabic sciences, and young Emirati hafizes frequently lead Ramadan tarawih here as part of their apprenticeship under the mosque's senior teaching reciters, receiving guidance in tajwid that will shape their careers for decades ahead.
