Tentang

Al Madinah al Riyadiyah Mosque lies within the Zayed Sports City complex in Abu Dhabi, the modern sports centred district whose name in Arabic translates as sports city. The Emirate of Abu Dhabi has invested heavily over the past few decades in world class athletic infrastructure, hosting international football, tennis, and athletics events, and the neighbourhood mosques that serve these compounds accommodate coaches, staff, visiting athletes, and local residents alike. This particular mosque stands as a thoughtful contemporary example of Gulf masjid architecture: a square prayer hall topped by a central low dome clad in cream tile, a pair of slim minarets, a shaded arcade for shoes and ablution, and a landscaped forecourt planted with date palms and desert flowers that bloom softly in the cool winter months. The interior is floored in carpet woven with geometric patterns in gold and deep green, with a mihrab finished in white marble inlaid with mother of pearl and a minbar in polished rosewood. A separate women's section with its own entrance offers the same finishes as the main hall. The congregation reflects the cosmopolitan character of Abu Dhabi: Emirati families, Egyptian and Sudanese coaches, South Asian groundskeepers, and African athletes all gather for the five daily prayers. Sermons on Jumu'ah are delivered in Arabic and include summaries in English and Urdu to accommodate the multilingual audience. Themes often concern discipline, the pursuit of excellence, and the mercy of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, toward all who sought him out. Ramadan fills the complex each evening for tarawih, and the mosque runs a major community iftar programme with iftar tents providing lentil soup, dates, rice with lamb, and Emirati luqaimat. Eid prayer spreads onto the surrounding plaza under the watchful gaze of the huge Zayed sports stadium. Close by stand the presidential Qasr al Watan palace with its illuminated evening performances, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque further west along the E10, the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat island, the corniche beach where families gather in the cool evenings, and the mangroves of Eastern Abu Dhabi rich with flamingos along the Arabian Gulf.
