Tentang

Hooyo's Kitchen and Poetry occupies a welcoming corner of Nairobi's Eastleigh neighbourhood, the dense and vibrant quarter known affectionately as Little Mogadishu, where Somali Kenyans and more recent arrivals from across the Horn of Africa have built one of the most dynamic commercial and cultural communities in East Africa. The restaurant takes its name from the Somali word hooyo, meaning mother, and pays homage to the generations of Somali women whose home kitchens have preserved the spice mingled cuisine of the Somali coast and interior while raising children on a diet of stories, proverbs, and memorised verses from the Quran. Nairobi itself is the cosmopolitan capital of Kenya and has hosted Somali, Yemeni, Swahili, Indian, and Arab Muslim communities for well over a century, with the mosques of Eastleigh, South C, and Pangani serving as focal points of Islamic learning and community welfare. Hooyo's menu combines traditional Somali dishes such as suqaar sautéed with cardamom and black pepper, bariis iskukaris layered with raisins and caramelised onions, xalwo sweetened with rosewater, sambusa parcels filled with spiced beef, and canjeero pancakes served with fresh honey, alongside contemporary East African favourites including grilled tilapia, nyama choma served with kachumbari, and chapati wraps. The restaurant also functions as a performance venue, hosting evenings of Somali gabay poetry, spoken word in Swahili and English, and lectures on the literary heritage of the wider Muslim world. All meat is sourced from certified halal suppliers and prepared according to Islamic principles of cleanliness. The dining area is arranged to accommodate families and larger groups, with a separate section reserved for those who prefer quieter surroundings. Prayer space is available on the premises for Dhuhr and Asr, and staff willingly pause service to accommodate congregational prayer. Nearby landmarks include the sprawling Eastleigh market, the Garissa Lodge commercial quarter, and several neighbourhood mosques whose muezzins fill the evening air with the call to Isha. Visitors are warmly received with sweet Somali tea, fragrant bukhoor, and the unforced hospitality of a Muslim home where the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, is remembered as the perfect host.
