Tentang

ETSAN is a well-established halal butcher and grocery chain in Vienna with deep roots in the Turkish community that began settling in Austria during the guest-worker era of the 1960s and 1970s. Unlike mainstream supermarkets that have added halal sections, ETSAN was built from the ground up as a halal business, giving it a particular authenticity valued by observant Muslim customers across the city. Walking into an ETSAN store, visitors are met by the sight of a long refrigerated counter displaying lamb racks, beef shanks, veal shoulders, marinated chicken wings, hand-minced kofta meat, beyti-style kebab preparations, and traditional Turkish sucuk and pastirma cured with garlic and fenugreek. The butchers, many of whom trained in Istanbul, Konya, or Anatolian villages, cut meat to order in the manner preferred by their customers, whether whole lamb legs for a Kurban Bayram celebration, thinly sliced döner meat stacked for home rotation, or bone-in pieces suitable for the slow-cooked Turkish stew called kuzu guvec. Beyond the butcher counter, ETSAN functions as a full-service Turkish-style market, with bakery shelves stocked with fresh simit, lavash, pide, and acma rolls delivered daily. The produce section features bunches of parsley, dill, and mint essential to Turkish and Levantine cooking, along with Turkish red peppers, cucumbers, and sumac-seasoned onions for kebab plates. A dry-goods aisle carries dozens of varieties of bulgur, lentils, chickpeas, and rice imported from Turkish producers. The dairy section sells feta-style white cheese, kashar, and strained yogurt in large tubs. During Ramadan, ETSAN transforms into a hub of activity, with extended hours for families preparing iftar and suhoor, and promotional displays of dates, dried fruits, compotes, and Turkish delight. The staff greet regulars by name, often in Turkish, and the community spirit fosters a sense of home for Vienna's Muslim residents navigating life in a central European city. ETSAN has expanded across multiple Vienna locations over the past several decades, and newer branches often incorporate modern retail design while preserving the butcher-shop heart of the business, ensuring that shoppers receive the same trusted quality whether they visit the original store in Favoriten or a newer location in Simmering or Rudolfsheim.
